What is Ideal Body Weight (IBW)?

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a calculation used to estimate a person's optimal weight based primarily on their height and gender. It serves as a general guideline to help individuals and healthcare professionals gauge what a healthy weight might be for a person, but it has its limitations.

IBW alone is not perfect as it does not account for factors like body composition, individual variations, health conditions, cultural differences, and psychological factors. To make a better decisions about health and weight management, it is important to use IBW in combination with other factors, such as body composition assessments, age, activity level, and any underlying health conditions. To achieve your weight-related goals and better overall well-being, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian.

Formulas for Estimating Ideal Body Weight

There are several common formulas and methods used to estimate ideal body weight or assess healthy weight ranges. Here are some of the commonly used ones:

  • Hamwi Formula (for adults): Calculates ideal body weight based on gender and height, with separate formulas for men and women.
  • Devine Formula (for men and women): Provides a straightforward calculation for ideal body weight regardless of gender, based on height.
  • Robinson Formula (for adults): Offers gender-specific ideal body weight calculations by considering height for both men and women.
  • Broca's Formula (for adults): Determines ideal body weight by subtracting a fixed value from height, with different constants for men and women.
  • Lemmens Formula (for adults): Calculates ideal body weight based on height squared, providing a single formula for both men and women.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): Utilizes weight and height to estimate an individual's overall body composition and classify them into categories (underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese) based on a single numerical value.

Hamwi Formula

  • For men: Ideal Body Weight (in kg) = 48 kg + 2.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet
  • For women: Ideal Body Weight (in kg) = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg for each inch over 5 feet

Devine Formula

  • Ideal Body Weight (in kg) = 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet (for both men and women)

Robinson Formula

  • For men: Ideal Body Weight (in kg) = 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5 feet
  • For women: Ideal Body Weight (in kg) = 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet

BMI Formula

  • BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m) * height (m))
